இத்திய அரசின் உயர்கல்வி நிறுவனங்களில் கல்வி பெறுவது  அகில இந்திய அளவிலும் உலக அளவிலும் வேலைவாய்ப்புகளை பெறுவதற்கு வாய்ப்பாக அமைகிறது. பொதுவாகவே அனைத்து உயர்கல்வி நிறுவனங்களிலும் கல்வி பெற நுழைவு தேர்வு அவசியமாகிறது. நாடு முழுவதும் இருக்கிற 14 மத்திய பல்கலைக்கழகங்களில்கலை, அறிவியல், தொழிற்கல்வி, தொழில்நுட்பம், சட்டம் ஆகிய பட்ட, பட்ட மேற்படிப்புகளை ஒரே நுழைவு தேர்வை எழுதுவதன் மூலம் எளிதாக நுழைய முடியும்.

தமிழகத்தில் திருவாரூரில் மத்திய பல்கலைக்கழகம் 2009 ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் செயல்பட்டு வருகிறது. இப்பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் பெரும்பான்மையாக வெளி மாநில மாணவர்கள் கல்வி கற்று வரும் சூழலில், தமிழக மாணவர்களுக்கு மத்தியப் பல்கலைக்கழக நுழைவுத் தேர்வு பற்றிய விழிப்புணர்வு குறைவாகவே இருக்கிறது எனலாம். கேரளத்தில் பள்ளிக் கல்வியை முடித்தவுடன் ஒரு ஆண்டை நுழைவுத் தேர்வுக்கு பயிற்சி பெறுவதற்காகவே செலவழிக்கிறார்கள். இந்த ஆண்டு Tuition year என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

மத்திய அரசின் உயர்கல்வி நிறுவனங்களில் நடத்தப்படுகிற நுழைவுத் தேர்வுகளில் வெற்றி பெற ஒரு ஆண்டு தயாரிப்பு என்பது போதாது. குறைந்தது ஒன்பதாம் வகுப்பிலிருந்து மாணவர்கள் தங்களது இலக்கை நிர்ணயித்துக் கொண்டு குறிப்பிட்ட நுழைவுத் தேர்விற்கு தயார் செய்து வருதல் வேண்டும். மிகக் குறைந்த செலவில் உயர் கல்வியினை பெற மத்தியப் பல்கலைக்கழகங்கள் பேருதவியாய் இருக்கின்றன. தகுதியான பேராசிரியர்கள்,  உலகத் தரத்திலான ஆய்வகங்கள்,  மேற்படிப்பு, ஆராய்ச்சி மற்றும் வேலை வாய்ப்பு பெறுவதற்கான சர்வதேச தொடர்புகள் ஆகியவை மத்தியப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் சிறப்பம்சங்களாக பார்க்கப்படுகிறது.

மொத்தம் 100 வினாக்கள்.இரண்டு மணி நேர எழுத்து தேர்வு நூறு வினாக்களுடன் கொள் குறி வகையை சார்ந்ததாக இருக்கும். ஒரு சரியான வினாவிற்கு ஒரு மதிப்பெண் வழங்கப்படும். ஒரு தவறான வினாவிற்கு புள்ளி இரண்டு ஐந்து மதிப்பெண்களும் (0.25) குறைக்கப்படும்.

பன்னிரண்டாம் வகுப்பு பொதுத் தேர்வில்  65 சதவிகித மதிப்பெண்களுடன் தேர்ச்சி மற்றும் பாடப் பிரிவிற்கு தகுந்தாற் போல் கணிதம், இயற்பியல், வேதியியல் அல்லது பிற பாடங்களைக் கொண்ட பிரிவில் சேர்கின்ற பட்டப்படிப்பிற்கு தகுந்தார் போல் படித்திருக்க வேண்டும்.

மற்ற எந்தக் கல்வி நிறுவனங்களையும் விட மத்திய பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் கல்வி கட்டணம் மிகக் குறைவு. மாணவர்கள் ஒரே நுழைவுத் தேர்வினை எதிர்கொள்வதன் மூலம் உயர் கல்வி, வேலை வாய்ப்பு, ஆராய்ச்சி வாய்ப்பினை பெற முடியும். =
